Despite being almost two years past the deadline for implementation, producers in Italy and Greece are continuing to flout the EU Welfare of Laying Hens Directive.

This, coupled with other issues that have occurred with imported eggs and egg products in recent years, including salmonella, dioxin contamination and allegations of free range fraud, means that egg products' users in the UK should take extra care when sourcing egg products from abroad.

In addition, ongoing confusion around the translation of certain terminology, particularly between free range and barn, makes the sourcing process for imported eggs and egg products problematic.

These risks can be avoided. Using British Lion egg products within food products and the Lion logo on packaging is an easy way to reassure consumers, guarantee responsible sourcing and highlight the quality of food products.

British Lion egg products are produced to a stringent Code of Practice, helping to minimise the risk to operators and ensure that they are using top quality, British egg products.
